Club History

Telstars began life in 1996 when Anita Hollman’s daughter Michelle and her friends, Debbie Grant, Libby Cumming and Clare Flannery, were playing netball for Kent U16s. When the county season ended lots of the county girls wanted to carry on playing and asked Anita if she would help them. The club started out with 10 players aged 16 years and after the first year membership rapidly grew to 24. A weekly training programme was initially introduced in Dartford with links to Leigh City Technology College . In 1996 a team was entered into The North West Kent Netball League in Division 12. Now the team is playing in Division 1, having won promotion every season since that first one!

Since then the club has negotiated links with Bromley High School to broaden the player base and to benefit from their excellent training facilities. The age groups catered for have also gradually increased until training is now offered to U12, U13, U14, U16, U19 and Seniors (Open Squad). Entry into The North West Kent League now comprises 6 squads of Seniors, U19s, U16s, U15s, U14s and U13s. The Telstars squads continue to win promotion on a regular basis and are moving up the divisions.

To enhance our players’ progression we enter the National Youth and Junior Championships each year as well as a number of South-East tournaments. We have a good record of success reaching the Finals on many occasions. A number of our players are regularly selected for the England Netball Talent Pathway with a couple selected for England duties.

The majority of our players live within a 10 mile radius of Bromley although some travel from further out into Kent . We now have even more links to local schools since some of our early players have qualified as P.E. Teachers and have returned to play and coach for the club. Older girls are encouraged to put something back into the club by taking Coaching and/or Umpiring Awards, helping with younger squads or taking on some club administration duties.

Membership is well over 100 and as well as our netball successes many firm friendships have been made. In 2004 we have developed a website to improve communication with our increasing membership and to enhance the profile of the club.

Presently we have teams in the following leagues:

Telstars (Seniors) = EN National Premier League Div 2, LSE Regional league Div 2 & London Polytechnic League.
